The Student Spotlight: Marcia Hawkins

The Writer's Corner is elated to have the honor of introducing our first honoree in our "Student Spotlight Corner."

In light of all the recent negative media coverage and the young men and women being reported on, who live in primarily urban communities, it is our absolute pleasure to shine the spotlight on young people who are making strides toward a brighter future despite the statistics.  So we are pleased, excited and proud to introduce to you, Ms. Marcia Hawkins.

Marcia is a sixteen-year-old junior who attends Chaparral High, home of the Cowboy's, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ms. Hawkins carries an 3.8 GPA and attends all honor classes with the exception of one AP class. Excelling in all areas of her high school academic career Marcia, who has been playing basketball since the age of five, also plays the small forward and guard positions for the Lady Cowboy's varsity basketball team and has been doing so since her freshman year. Staying fit and active Marcia, is also a part of Chap's powerlifting team as well as, their varsity track team.

Now in her junior year Marcia, has no plans on slowing down and is more focused than ever! When asked what keeps her focused and motivated she tells us, "besides basketball and wanting to be the first in her family to graduate from college, it's her mom."  Marcia's mother  has been living with an heart condition which has lead open heart surgery.Marcia's mom told  TWC that Marcia was born with Kawasaki disease which is also a heart condition. However, Marcia has since been given a clean bill of health, but still has yearly heart check-ups.

WOW! Such inspiration can be gained from Ms. Hawkins and her commitment to achieving her goals in spite of the adversities that she has already faced in her young adult life. There is no glass ceiling for this young lady, as she forges ahead to a bright and successful future. Although once set on attending U.S.C, Marcia now plans to attend Alabama State and recently submitted an essay for consideration in an upcoming, week-long HBCU tour.

Hawkins #20

Marcia developed a love for architecture in her freshman year and would like to one day make her mark in the field. However, don't limit Ms. Hawkins, with the WNBA in her grasp, possibly the USA Olympic Track Team, or designing the next billion dollar sky rise building, we here at TWC know that we have not seen or heard the last of Marcia Hawkins, rather this is just her beginning. Keep reaching for that glass ceiling Marcia and when you reach it don't stop, bust right through it.

TWC would like to thank Stacey Blaylock, for bringing this phenomenal young lady to our attention, she truly deserve the spotlight!
